Associate/Junior Bioprocess Engineer

Join our Bioprocess Development (BPD) team within the R&D department, pioneering the future of sustainable food production. We are focusing on optimising large-scale cell culture processes for cultivated beef.

We are seeking a highly motivated associate/Jr. Bioprocess Engineer to derive the optimisation and scale-up for our core cell culture process. The successful candidate will be a hands-on expert in continuous cultivation, focusing heavily on enhancing perfusion culture efficiency and developing robust fed-batch strategies for high-density mammalian cell growth.

Full-time / Part-time · Maastricht

Do you want the same as we do?

Would you like to be a crucial part of bringing cultured meat to market, having a massive positive impact on the planet from an environmental and animal welfare perspective?

Do you love to collaborate within an intrinsically driven, international team of world-class scientists and engineers in a fast-paced and exciting start-up environment?

Are you ready to transform bioprocess efficiency? Join us to optimise media and feeding strategies, applying your expertise in bioreactors and cell culture techniques!

Your key responsibilities

Process Optimisation: Design, execute, and analyze experiments in bioreactors (bench-scale and pilot-scale) aimed at optimising critical process parameters for mammalian cell perfusion culture.

Perfusion Enhancement: Deepen understanding and optimise continuous cell culture systems utilising Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) and/or Alternating Tangential Flow (ATF) technology to maximise cell viability, density, and nutrient utilisation.

Fed-Batch Development: Taking part in the development and optimisation of scalable fed-batch process strategies, including nutrient media design, feeding regimes, and process control logic.

Troubleshooting: Systematically investigate bioreactor performance issues, harvest challenges, and filtration problems, develop root-cause analyses, and implement corrective actions.

Data Analysis and  Reporting: Analyze complex experimental data, and clearly document findings in technical reports and internal presentations.

SOP Development: Draft and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and batch records related to bioreactor operation and maintenance.

Collaboration: Work closely with upstream scientists, analytical chemists, and the facilities/engineering teams.

Our ideal future team member

B.Sc. or M.Sc. in bioprocess engineering, chemical engineering, or biotechnology.

Hands-on experience in bioprocess development within an R&D or pilot-scale setting.

Mandatory experience working with mammalian cell lines (CHO, HEK, stem cells, etc.) at high cell densities.

Proven ability to independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot bench-scale bioreactors.

Extensive practical experience with perfusion systems and associated technologies, specifically TFF and/or ATF.

Demonstrated experience in the development and optimization of fed-batch or perfusion process modes.

Strong background in experimental design (DoE), data analysis, mass balance calculations, and metabolic analysis.

Adaptability to changes and experience in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent team player with strong organisational skills for experimental work and result reporting.

Willingness to work on the weekend is required.

Mosa Meat is a cultured meat start-up based in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Our team created the world's first cultured hamburger - that is, real meat grown directly from animal cells rather than slaughtering an animal. Our aim is to make cultured meat a mass commercial product so that eating meat is more sustainable, kinder to animals and better for human health.
